Diamond Rings

A diamond ring reflects intimate and intense love of the couple for each other. The history of “wedding rings” can be related with the Fourth Lateran Council presided over by Pope Innocent III in the year 1215. A longer waiting period between betrothal and marriage was declared. Plain rings of silver, iron or sometimes gold were used for the purpose.

Gems were used to assure the status symbols to the aristocracy. Certain rules and regulations were made to preserve social status, ensuring that only privileged people would wear gems and jewels. But gradually with the passage of time, diamonds and gems were made available to the middle class also.

A unique story is attached with wedding rings. If the bride and the groom wear diamond rings made out of the same mold and from the same metal at the same time, then the two wedding rings are considered “one” at the moment of their creation. When they wear it as a part of a pair, it will directly connect them even when they are apart. The process symbolizes the connection that they share along with some solid, enduring and endless bond.

In Western tradition, this engagement ring when worn by a women indicates her engagement to get married. In many countries, the ring is worn on the left-hand finger but in other countries, such as Poland and Ukraine, it is necessary that it should be worn on the right hand finger.

These days it’s not only brides who prefer wearing diamond rings for weddings, but the majority of men also prefer wearing rings as a symbol commitment and fidelity.

Earlier the Romans used to wear iron for this symbolic strength but now it has been replaced with gold, silver and diamond because of the beauty while iron rusts. There are other alternatives for yellow gold, such as Silver or Electrum that one can choose to gift to their brides but as there is a saying - “Diamond rings are women’s best friend”, one has to impress them with diamonds!

The circled shape of the ring symbolizes intimate love and the renewed promises of the couple. They symbolize eternity and completeness. The circles also represent the rounds of the heavens and also the never ending arrival of the seasons, marked by the ceremony and party.

As the Sun and the Moon are regarded as the symbol for masculine and feminine features of the cosmos, the circles in astrology stand for both Sun and the Moon.

The trend of men wearing diamond rings is relatively new. The custom is purely a gesture of love, romance and affection that husbands show for her bride by wearing wedding rings. Their rings can also be of a religious nature, with the crucifix symbol and diamonds engraved on them.
